Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur Review
Introduction (Rate, Brand)
The Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur is a new gem in the Hilton award chart. It requires 10,000 points or 4,000 points and 106 MYR ($35.50) a night.
Kuala Lumpur is a very competitive hotel market where even the Ritz Carlton often has packages for under $150.
But I'm a Hilton Diamond (yes from credit card spend on the Hilton Surpass AMEX) and the Doubletree is just 3 years old.
Location (Sightseeing, Airport, Business)
The hotel is located just off Jalan Ampang and 10 minutes walk from KLCC (Petronas Towers). There is a LRT station just on the other side of the road. The hotel is part of the Intermark development which is an upscale food mall and office building.
It's in a good location for sightseeing and business. You can get to your gate at KLIA in just under 60 minutes with LRT and the KLIA Express if all things go well.
Check-In (Friendliness, Efficiency)
VERY friendly check-in with a a very efficient crew. There are warm cookies for each guest and I was upgraded to an Executive Suite without asking as a Diamond. The hotel also offers 3 pieces of laundry complimentary for HHonors Diamond Members.
I also loved that the hotel just accepts your credit card and does not run away with your passport making 10 copies and filling documents for 15 minutes (as some hotels in Thailand do).
Rooms (Cleanliness, Space provided)
Very spacious suite with a separate room divider to the bedroom. There is a modern work desk and chair. The bathroom is big with a separate rain shower and toilet. My room in the 28th floor had great views over KL as well. There was some very well fitting modern art at the wall. The AC was quiet and very effective.
The LRT runs next to the hotel - it's audible but certainly does not keep you from sleeping (at least on the upper floors).
Sleeping (Mattress, Comfort level, Noise)
I'm a mattress snob and can't stand places with old or too soft mattresses. I found the mattress here just perfect - not too hard or soft. The sheets were fantastic and inducive to sleep despite the high outside temperatures.
Food (Breakfast, Executive Lounge, other food & drinks)
Enormous selection of breakfast items at the main breakfast floor. Probably the most I've ever seen - they have whole sections with Indian, Chinese and Malay and Western Breakfast items. However the quality is just ok.
The Executive lounge features a much smaller selection but the food items are of higher quality (cheese!). Also the coffee is really good.
The lounge enjoys great views over KL and the lounge staff is simply fantastic - knowledgeable and friendly!
KL is know for it's high priced alcoholic drinks so the crowd gathers in the lounge for drinks at 5.30 PM. Wine and beers and well as some liquors are on offer. The appetizers vary every day bit are just ok, nothing to really look forward to.
Service Level
I found service in the lounge to be exemplary with Keith and his team shining every day. Fluent English, impeccable attitude and knowledge really made a big difference. Service level at the Makan kitchen was good too but it's just very crowded at peak breakfast hours. The front desk was equally friendly and the 'care line' was always able to help in seconds. Impressive!
Overall
This hotel is a fantastic find not just because it's such good value but also because it's just an awesome city hotel. It's similar to the Hyatt Regency ShaTin, Hong Kong but the Doubletree is in a much better location and the service level is just so much better here. If you'd like to see how a city hotel should look like, come here :)
