Review: Holiday Inn Express Chengdu Westgate

The Holiday Inn Express Chengdu Westgate is a brand new property which just opened this year for business. It is located directly at the 1st Ring Road of Chengdu and about 10 minutes drive from the city center. Traffic isn't horrible (yet) in Chengdu and taxis are incredibly cheap. I found the location to be pretty nice - there is a Starbucks about 10 minutes walk away and a huge number of cheap eateries about the same distance away.
The lobby design is up to any Holiday Inn standards - certainly above most US hotels.
I paid only $32 per night using a 50% off rate posted on IHG.com. Certainly one of the cheapest chain hotels I ever booked.
However the room was great in typical Holiday Inn Fashion. It was really big and the bathroom featured a huge shower area. To my positive surprise the heating worked just fine and I could actually heat a place to 70 degrees (almost no building in Chengdu is heated in winter for some reason).
The bed was very comfortable and the comforter warm. The Internet ranged from very fast to very slow. A VPN often helped not all the times to get better speeds.
The breakfast area wasn't heated though and at 50 degrees very uncomfortable for breakfast. The mostly Chinese guests did not seem surprised though :) However I did not have the impression that the breakfast was something I'd like to try really :)
Given the low rate I was Very happy with my stay. Such a rate wont even get you parking in many US hotels. The rooms was new, spacious, well appointed and the beds great.
However at a normal price I'd be a bit more concerned about location. While taxis are cheap it can be difficult to get one and it's almost mysterious why taxi drivers don;t know any single landmark in their city.
I'd be very happy to come back again.
