Chengdu has a lot of hotels! Most major brands have invested with IHG having the most hotels in the city. I had never stayed in a Somerset Suites before (it's an Ascott property) so with rates dipping into $80 including tax it was time to try it.
The Somerset is located next to Chengdu main thoroughfare and it's juts 10 minutes walk to the local downtown area. However there are 2 busy roads just next to it which create very audible noise in the rooms.
Check-in was very friendly and very quick. The staff spoke fluent English and abbreviated the complicated registration process as much as possible.
The apartment was stunning and easily on par with most suites from Hyatt I had. The was very new and with high quality appliances and materials. A huge living room with a small kitchen, a large bedroom and a huge bathroom.
The only issue was that given the freezing temperatures the heating system would not be able to cope and the place was really cold. So it was 'jacket on' time!
My rate included breakfast but it wasn't something to write home about - some spicy dumplings, lackluster coffee and white toast. I skipped it.
Chengdu's best coffee shop called 'Maan Coffee' is just downstairs from the suites and dishes out delicious coffee and waffles for just a couple of dollars.
In summer or spring I can see myself falling in love with the suites. Certainly one of the best hotel rooms I ever got for $88 anywhere. Just a pity it wasn't easy to heat it.
