Review: Holiday Inn Express Jakarta Thamrin, Indonesia

Many rather luxurious hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia are pretty affordable. So why a Holiday Inn Express?
Location, location, location and value was the magic formula for me. The hotel is also brand spanking new and up to the IHG brand standards in every way.
The hotel is located within walking distance of the Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia malls which are in central Jakarta's city centre. They house an enormous array of shopping, dining, coffee and entertainment options. Jakarta traffic has a bad reputation for a reason, but staying in this part of town allows you to walk everywhere and stay inside for most of the hot daytime hours.
The lobby is small but stylish. Check-in was very friendly and my Platinum status got me - ahem - a room towards the back with a little less noise :) All rooms are the same size and internet and breakfast are included in the price for every guest.
Many hotels in the area have priced themselves out of the market (Grand Hyatt and Kempinski both charge $300/night) but this hotel charges just $60/ night - so it's a steal and a great way to run up nights for a Big Win promotion.
The rooms themselves are rather small but functional and don't feel cramped. Many reviewers noted that the AC isn't very cold - I didn't have that issue but then I always switch off it off at night anyhow. I rested well in the great quality bed that had fresh, crisp linen.
The hotel has a fitness area but sadly no pool - for this price per night, who's arguing?!
The WiFi was acceptable at about 1Mbit but it constantly disconnected me. I'm not sure what triggered it but it was a little annoying.
Breakfast was surprisingly good. There is an espresso machine and variety of buffet food including some good pastries. It's all presented in a clean and modern environment.
This may not be a super luxurious option but it's certainly a great place to explore central Jakarta over a couple of days.
