After my glowing review of the new Cathay Pacific Business Class from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur last year, I was looking forward to my flight and was (perhaps foolishly) expecting the same product. After a quick and very professional check-in, things first turned sour in adepressing first class Bangkok Airport loungeand then in a disappointing seat on board. The seat is comparable to a domestic first class seat. On this journey, my seat neighbor turned out tobe a bit of a flight brat. He used every opportunity to stretch out his legs and avoid moving them when I got up forthe rest room or to get my backpack. Oh well...
Our flight got underway on time and the pilot gave afriendly greetingover the intercomand briefed us about our upcoming flight. I got some champagne before takeoff (despite my seatmate's best efforts to keep the flight attendant continuously busy himself at that time). For me, the catering service is traditionally the weakest part of Asian business class airlines - Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific both have that issue (among others). For a continent that spins out the best street food in the world, it seems incredible to me that airline food is so bad. Thehighlight for me is usually the ice cream!
The seat reclines just about 30 degrees. I tried to watch a movie on my laptop, although I wasn't too comfortable. The flight duration was just about 2.5 hours and before I could really come to terms with my Hollywood product, we started our descent into Bangkok.
Transit in Hong Kong requires you to go through an additional security screening. The line was long and it took me about 30 minutes to go through it. There might be additional transit security, butmaybe itisn't easy to find unless you know the airport layout. In conclusion, this wasn't my favorite flight with my favorite airline. My expectations were certainly a bit too high, but this wasn't Cathay Pacific's most premium product for me. Book your flight on Cathay Pacific here.
