Camino Real Aeropuerto Hotel, Mexico City Review
The Camino Real Aeropuerto hotel is located right across from Terminal 1 at Mexico City Benito Juarez Airport. There is an elevated walkway that gets you across in a few minutes. The immediate neighborhood right behind the hotel is pretty dilapidated and full of broken cars and stray dogs. Not an area you want to explore at night!
I had made a reservation via Expedia for $130 and the check-in agent couldn'tinitially locate it. After a bit of back and forth, he finally had it and my keys were in my hand.
I got a room in the 'North Tower' that sits back a bit from the main roads, freeways, and runways. The lobby and my room both gave off a 'Marriott-style' - more red and violet colors than you'd expect. The room was in great shape with a comfy bed, high-quality linens and a small desk/table area.
TheInternet came in at 12 Mbit and was stable the whole time. The bathroom was well-equipped too and had some great bathroom amenities including complimentary luxury toiletries. I could have easily thought that part of the hotel was a Marriott.
The room was also very quiet despite the noise outside; strangely enough, the only noise that came through was from the (many) barking dogs at night.
The airport has a food court which is good enough for a quick dinner and there are a number of Pasion del Cielo coffee shops that brew surprisingly good coffee.
After some work, I decided to try out the gym. I had low expectations since this is an airport hotel after all. How wrong I was; this gym is massive, with at least 20 cardio machines, a huge weightlifting area with beautiful runway views and a large indoor pool. I was very positively surprised.
In the morning, my wake-up call was on time (call me old-fashioned!) and due to me having a pre-paid reservation, I simply walked out of the hotel confidently. That sometimes gives me stares or even stern security personnel blocking my way. Not here - I simply mentioned my room number and seconds later, the agent cleared me to go.
In sum, this is a much better airport hotel than what I expected. The rooms are modern and functional and the massive gym gives you a dose of wellness after those long hours on a plane.
