Just ten stops from Shinjuku on the Chuo line, it moves at a slower pace while keeping Tokyo's conveniences close at hand. Torsten adored strolling its main street lined with mom and pop shops selling crafts and antiques. Neighborhood joints serve up soba noodles and tasty curry. Locals here stay connected, lingering to chat on street corners and greeting the same shopkeepers daily.
Within Paris, the hilly cobblestoned lanes of Montmartre evoke the quaint village it once was, before being enveloped by the metropolis. Amid Kyoto's Shinto shrines and zen Buddhist temples, Torsten felt his anxious mind reach a state of calm he didn't know possible. Wandering through stone gardens like Ryōan-ji, where 15 rocks contemplate each other across rippled sand, creates space for clearing the mind's clutter. Immersing in rituals like sado, the Japanese tea ceremony, emphasises being fully present in each mundane movement and interaction.
High in the Indian Himalayas, McLeod Ganj granted a glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist values after the Dalai Lama established a government-in-exile here. Seeing young monks debate scripture animatedly in the Tsuglagkhang Complex connected Torsten with their dedication to spiritual growth. Witnessing mantra inscriptions spun on handheld metal wheels as pilgrims complete the kora ritual circumambulation around the Dalai Lama's temple united him with this practice of devotion.
Jerusalem’s Old City contains important holy sites for Jews, Christians and Muslims. At the Western Wall, seeing Jewish faithful praying, wailing and tucking slips of paper into crevices reminded Torsten that spiritual rituals bring comfort amid suffering. Daily life intertwines with death and reincarnation as funeral processions toward the Ganges pass pilgrims bathing in its holy waters. During an evening aarti ritual on the ghats, in the glow of spiraling fire lamps, chanting priests and clanging bells reinforced that divinity underlies all worldly experience. Beyond specific faiths, Varanasi testifies to the ever-present sacred.
